The Bullmastiff is a working breed originally bred as a guard dog to patrol estates and assist gamekeepers by seeing off any poachers. He originates from England and was developed by crossing the Old English Mastiff with the Bull Dog. He is an extremely large dog with a very big head, long tail and slightly squashed muzzle. He has hazel eyes, a black nose and a strong, muscular body.

His coat is short, and needs the minimum amount of grooming. Colour variations include fawn and brindle. He is a working breed and therefore, needs up to two hours exercise a day. A kind, intelligent and extremely brave breed, Bull Mastiffs are very intelligent and are quick to assess situations. In the right hands they can make good obedience dogs, they are also very loyal and will guard their families with devotion.

However his size and intelligence mean he is also capable of causing a lot of damage in the wrong hands and should never be allowed to play or run with children unmanaged. The Bull Mastiff rarely barks and it is really quite a silent dog. Over the years these dogs have been selectively bred to guard or to act as search and rescue experts. Standing up to 70cm at the shoulder and weighing in at between 50 and 60kg the Bull Mastiff is not a dog for the meek or frail owner. He needs strong handling and positive reinforcement in order to thrive.

The Bull mastiff has a life span of up to 10 years and can be more prone to hip dysplasia and bloat than other dogs. The Bull mastiff should also be fed carefully and exercised accordingly, as he is also prone to obesity.
